Black Swamp - File Description  

$ TEXAS $ has returned with his tonnes-0-fun 4 player map! This is not your typical Company of Heros map,once inside, you'll notice that it is darker then most other maps, which adds a certain kind of ambiance to your gaming experience, but not so dark that you think you're playing Doom III, a very nice touch. You'll also notice that the landscape is somewhat soggy, in fact, there is a lot of water...indicitive of what alot of battles were like during the second World War; It wasn't always sunshine and hikes... Don't fret though, as most of the water will allow for the passing of vehicles and Infantry.

To break up the scenery in Black Swamp, there has been an addition of a small village (to add to the uncertainty of knowing where your opposition is), along with some plants; Will you be the one to walk away with bragging rights?

Black Swamp
(2 vs. 2)

Black Swamp:
A 4 player map, which is dark and wet. The map contains a small village, a lot
of plants, and a lot of water.

Note: Most of the water is passable by infantry and vehicles.


-Unzip all the files in "Black_Swamp.zip" into "C:\Program Files\THQ\Company of Heroes\WWII\Data\Scenarios\"

-Create a shortcut to "Company of Heroes.exe" if you don't have one.

**if you haven't added maps before**

-Right-click on the "Company of Heroes.exe" shortcut and add " -dev" to the end of the target.

"C:\Program Files\THQ\Company of Heroes\RelicCOH.exe"

"C:\Program Files\THQ\Company of Heroes\RelicCOH.exe" -dev

** you must have a space between (.exe") and (-dev) **

I'm just about to play this map and already I noticed a couple of things.

Like Coasts and Climbs, (and also from a lot of other builders) please delete your .bak files as that doubles the sizes of your packages. .bak files are not useful to us players.

You may want to use the map per folder method of installing your maps to Program FilesCompany of Heros....mp

Name your files like black_swamp.info, etc rather than Map Two2.info.

Name your enclosing directory of black_swampmp to just simply black_swamp and have us dump the WHOLE directory into our mp directory. For instance since 1.61, CoH allows us to separate each custom map into their own directory within the mp directory. Each with their own loading folder, etc.

There really are 3 ways to install custom maps. I really wish there would be an agreed upon standard within this community.

1) dump everything into the huge mp directory and launch with the -dev mode.
2) dump individual folders into the huge mp directory and launch with the -dev mode.
3) dump .sga files into the Documents and SettingsMy Games....scenarios directory and launch normally.

I'll make my comments about game play in a little bit; as soon as I win. smile

In the view of fixed postions...

So it seems the Axis have better field position with resources closer. But in victory point mode, the Allies have better position. Also, the Allies must cross swamp before accessing any resources. This puts the Allies at an even further disadvantage.

I'd say the buildup was quite slow for me as Allies due to lack of anything but manpower, but I was able to beat the AI handily despite the disadvantages I faced. Good setup despite the favoring of positions 3 & 4.

Thanks for your comments Kahn1, the size of this file concerned me a little since I can only send 20mb. I sent this map in over a week ago and since then I have found new ways to release them such as the .sga, which I plan to use on my next maps. This should also improve the names of the files, the only reason the files are called "map Two2" is because I usually don't decide on a name until the map is almost finished, the .sga will fix this.

I personally as a player prefer the .sga method. One file and no need for -dev.

Though building an .sga vs any other method of distribution does not seem to decrease the upload size. An .sga seems to be simply a tarball.

Just make sure you delete your .bak files.

I was working with the .sga files today and noticed that when I extracted the files from the .sga the .bak files were not there. That seems explains why the .sga files appeared smaller.

The premise of the map is fairly interesting, however I concur it does seem axis-biased. More water, less land would be the direction I would suggest. Swamp it up just a little more and allow infantry to shine in this map.

Have played this quite a few times 1- and 2- player against hard or expert AI.

We rated this 9/10 with the comment "very open; extremely challenging".
