Introduction:
During World War II, tanks were developed at faster rate than ever before. In 1920's and 1930's many countries classified tanks as an untried weapon, not paying too much attention to their development and deployment. Germany on the other hand under Adolf Hitler's rule was working on the new kind of warfare "Blitzkrieg" - The Lightning War that involved massive use of tanks, motorized infantry and airforce. Tactics of Blitzkrieg designed new role for tanks - spearheads for quick penetration of an enemy territory. On September 1st of 1939, Germans had demostrated Panzerwaffe's superiority to the entire world in their Blitzkrieg through Poland that only lasted five weeks. This demonstration of force started worldwide conflict known as World War II, which lasted six years.
During the war years German designers developed and planned many designs that revolutionized worldwide tank designs and strongly influenced post-war and modern western tank designs.
"Knights of our times ... Tank units, mobile, fast and hard hitting, and directed by wireless from headquarters, attack the enemy. This armoured machine paves the way to victory, flattening and crushing all obstacles and spitting out destruction." Signal, 1940. (Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung 4/7/1939).

German panzers Panzer is also an abbreviation of the WWII German designation for tanks, Panzerkampfwagen ("armoured combat vehicle", abbreviated PzKpfw), used by the German Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht. German panzer models were given designations like Panzer I, or Panzer VI Tiger. For a list, see German armoured fighting vehicles of World War II. "PzKpfW" means literally the same as AFV (armoured fighting vehicle).
Individual variations of these basic marks were given an Ausführung (version) letter, and consequently the field of Panzer recognition is extremely complex. Great lengths have been gone to explain the differences between a Pz.Kpfw III Ausf. E(U) and a Pz.Kpfw III Ausf. F(U), for example. The word panzer is occasionally confused with the name of the Pzkpfw V Panther tank.
Tank destroyers were Panzerjäger or Jagdpanzer ("hunting tanks"), self-propelled infantry guns were Sturmgeschütze ("assault guns"), while self-propelled artillery pieces were usually referred to as Panzerfeldhaubitze
