Frozen Over (0.8) - File Description

Description:
About the file
Not only is he returning to our staff, Tureri is also back with a new map based on a winter battle in central Europe.

Staff Impression
All snow maps have a comon problem - Company Of Heroes was not designed to handle them originally. For a mapper, this means they provide a challenge, one not everybody manages to master. There are however mappers who are skilled enough to get around those issues and who produce quality, and Tureri marks no exception to this.
This map, both gameplay and layout wise, is a close to perfect recreation of conditions you would expect from winter battles or the general conditions at the Russian front, providing a refreshing change to the more comon village/town/countryside maps. Everyone who enjoys winter battles will be in for a treat here.

Hmm, I can't see this in the skirmish list - I reckon that the list is these days more full of vanilla maps and there is not enough space for listing all the ones in either scenario or mp folders. If I delete some dloaded maps, I can suddenly see the newer maps. So that clears up why some maps can't be seen as I used to have dozens of maps available in good old CoH V1.0.

BTW, converting SGA to SGB also seems to make some maps available (I have ToV 2.601.

I put the maps in BOTH the scenario and mp folders; Maybe I am being overcautious but it seems I can't see some maps in the wrong folder - is this a difference due to the SGA or SGB being folder specific.

Any thoughts on the above Pille?

Right, I'll give this one a go (after I have removed the others).

Ciao,

You're asking me about details I never bothered to look into to be honest.

What I know from experience on this site is that some people put a huge value into the file format and refuse to download maps in .sga or .sgb format, seeing that before I started working on this site I didn't even know there was downloadable content for the game though I can hardly be considered an expert.

Regarding the maps, a limitation of the amount of maps available at once would make sense in terms of keeping the loading-times to a certain level. I can not tell if this was an intentional change performed by the developers or an accident in one of their patches. Seeing the amount of those available I'd be surprised if they still had any overview about their changes at all.

The formats are relatively simple. SGB files are the raw files and require an external file system. These are the easiest to edit whereas SGA Files is an archive of the SGB files with the filesystem inside, which COH automatically loads. The advantage to SGA is that it is significantly harder for your average player to open the maps with specific programs to do it. SGA is simply more convient, for me atleast. My guess to maps not appearing would be a COH clause for maximum maps displayed. probably under the assumption there would be not too many maps as the origional COH did not have World Builder until a later update.

Map first, lovely snow detail - putting wire posts in gulleys and rolling low hills are lovely to see - desperate fighting for the main two points is the result of it being a small map. Anyone can win or lose this in the first ten minutes, after which it is a slow and painful death.

I salute you! Great effort,

I made this map appearin the file list by deleting some of the other user maps so this is indeed the answer to the invisible maps problem (sometimes). Thank you Pille and Tureri for your information, you are absolutely right - they have implemented a maximum, though I did not quite understand what you meant by the advantage of SGA. I might test out if the MP and SCEN folders are format specific one day.
