#1 - No. - Posted by: Jannev (Member) on 01-12-2010 at 02:06
No. I don't think that RTS game should have clan activity. Clan activity is good for FPS games where you can add into nicname a clantag after creating profile. But in coh you can edit your profile only once and adding clantag is not good reason to spoil onetime ability.
#2 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 01-12-2010 at 02:18
I don't quite get how clan-tags play a role in this site supporting clans, I have seen quite a few around before in fact.
#3 - Posted by: Jannev (Member) on 01-12-2010 at 03:36
What you didn't get? Clan-tags are important part of clans and coh doesn't include ability to add clan-tags to profile names. If in somewhere future becomes path to coh with support to add clan-tags, then this poll could be more popular, at this point you have to create a new profile to include clan-tag to your profile name. Also because of you can't add spaces and special symbols, not even "!?.,/()", clan activity is very low in this game. I have seen some recruitment games hosted but there is not visiting a lot of players. For example in Far cry 2 has great clan activity, you can add clan-tag simply opening console and typing in: use_this_clan_tag "clantag" "profilename" -without "" - marks.
#4 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 01-12-2010 at 04:01
Huh? There is a fair amount of CoH clans out there, not being able to put a clan tag into an online profile really doesn't stop anyone from organized gaming.
Also, this does not answer why we as CoH community site should not support existing clans.
#5 - Posted by: Jannev (Member) on 01-12-2010 at 04:34
Well, my point is that clan activity is not very strong part of RTS games. But players may like to set up tournamets with optional prices, which are usually popular in RTS games. Clan activity is very strong part of FPS games, because of high number of players in same team.
#6 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 01-12-2010 at 04:40
It is not my intention to increase clan activity though, the poll question is if there should be an area for them on this site. Bringing FPS games in here as contra argument is kind of missing the topic.
#7 - Posted by: Jannev (Member) on 01-12-2010 at 05:23
There should not be area at this site for clans (only coh), those are not strong part of RTS games. But tournament area may be good idea, but I am not saying that I would be setting up tournaments.

#8 Pretty much the way I see it, but I would also like to hear what way of support clans would like to see. Perhaps the one or another may want to get in contact with me.
The Eastern Front is going to achieve what so many RTS players have been yearning for so many years: The integration of the Soviet Union into Company of Heroes.
First of all, do not worry. EF is not going to harm your normal CoH in any way, you can still play it normally. Also, it does not overwrite any of the exisiting factions. It will add the new factions, and you can still play with the old ones as well.
Our goal is the integration of the Red Army and the Ostheer into CoH. Complete with new models, skins, sounds, buildings, tech trees and maps.
We have already come a long, difficult way. Modding CoH is not easy. But we have an ambitious team of crack modders and we have taken all the hurdles. And now, two and a half years after our very first idea for this mod, we are close to making our initial release.
Take your time and look around, there's many interesting things to find.

Trust me, I wished I could change it back.
#4 - Posted by: Jannev (Member) on 12-21-2009 at 07:20
The main page is looking little bit odd. #1 I agree. Info box at comments is good but its hard to found anything from main page. POTD's place is changed and that crazy "controll panel" should be at top of the site, not in that kind of place. I am repeating my self but google adverts are badly placed. 1 advert per page is understandable but in middle of the page?!?

It is okay but the picture of the day button brings the screen to the featured files. The short description of the new maps is a keeper.

#8 This is currently beyond my control as the management has blocked those functions for "maintenance" since nearly a month. Please continue that separate discussion via email with me as it doesn't belong into the poll.
So actually I have to agree to your previous comment, "I don't like it, I would also appreciate it if the affiliates were put back up." Together with old style and my ability to maintain this site properly again.

On a more positive note, seeing that I'm currently more or less disabled when it comes to bringing content here I have found the time to put the modding forum forward we have been asking you about before.
By the looks of it and if progress remains at today's rate we can put it live tomorrow. I will keep you updated.
Voting on threads works, polls work as well, and on demand an affiliates section will be up too. (Before I get in trouble here, that was a joke for the more serious fellas)

It has been some time since the latest news regarding the site came in, so I think it is time for another heads-up on what's going on around here. These kind of news items will soon be posted on a monthly base in shape of a "CoHFiles Insider", similar to what you know from the network but more site specific.
A new face in our rows
Yeah so it is time to welcome a new guy! Recently you have seen his name under a couple of file reviews, which was his "trial & error" time. This time has passed and he can be considered a fine addition to our 3-guys-team. Therefor, please give a warm welcome to Lint who will be taking care of your files and news on CompanyOfHeroesFiles!
The situation with the polls and votes
As you know, this is an issue which has bugged many over the last months, and the reason why we did not change the polls around here much is simply that we saw no point in giving you another white-page item. There finally is news about that though which is taken from the actual network debate, saying the core bug which has been causing this and which was so hard to track down will be fixed in a matter of days. There is hope on the horizon
That's it - for now at least. I will be waiting until some stuff regarding the staff backend is fixed before trying new projects to improve the site, but I promise you will find out about those soon enough. Stay tuned and thank you for reading this!

#1 - The basic idea behind this... - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 10-17-2009 at 03:47
...is to support mappers (and of course modders too) who are new to the content creation of Company of Heroes. The most likely option seems to create an outsourced forum (which doesn't provide a problem for me at all) where everyone from the community could sign up and exchange experience with World Builder and whatever other tools you may be using.
To get to the only negative aspects in this, I don't suppose most here would mind signing up separately, however if this gets realized it will be connected with costs for me. You do not need to worry, the service would be provided for free, but I do need a clear vote on wether to realize this or not. If you don't want to participate please be honest and state so, because I do not want to throw my money out the window for an inactive site.
Thank you for your participation!

i am all for a site to help mappers and moders but if it will cost out of pocket to do .
two questions will have to be asked
1 can it be recouped.
2 can the adds sustain another site
that is all
#6 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 10-18-2009 at 02:38
I think you misunderstood my first post, for the members this will be absolutely cost- and advert-free. I have a vacant life-long vBulletin-license and a rented server which I pay for monthly, the only additional costs for me would come in regarding the setup of a domain.
So to get this cleared, there will be no costs or advertisements of any kind for the members, goes all out of my pockets

I have watched this more or less silently so far because I share your feelings regarding the situation with the voting and other bugs. However, I will be blunt, it has been taken too far. Modifications, maps and other parts of the site have by now been spammed regarding the voting issue, downgraded, and partially already lead to bans as apparently voting is so important for some that it throws all good manners overboard when it's not working.
Most of these comments are like "I would give you a 9/10 if I could vote", "why can I still not vote" etc etc, and it really is enough now. I've tried it with a funny approach in the poll but even that was abused by a few. So we will now take a serious approach to it.
If you have questions regarding the voting issue, you can ask them here in this news item, or in our community forums. Posting about this further in the POTD, other news items, the polls, info pages, or files, will result in a comment ban of not less than one week. Repeadiatly bringing it up can and will result in a permanent loss of comment privileges.
I am just as annoyed as most of you are about the bugs and the fact I have to put up with them in my daily work. You do not need to rub it under everyone else's noses all the time, we are all affected equally.

Community Object Editor Documentation - Mod News Posted by: CanadianBorg on 08-24-2009 @ 21:00 - Source: Darkbladecr
This News Item has been viewed 8640 times! I recently published a video and a PDF file explaining exactly how to use the Object Editor to get your custom models into CoH with their own animations, FX and sounds.
Anyone who is into modding into CoH should seriously check this out . There is even a walkthrough video that goes through all the steps.
as you may remember, in June we announced the soon-to-come "Featured Modifications" area. The technical issues of FileFront have thrown us back in the schedule a little, but since the staff is nearly back at full force and we do have the time to dedicate it fully to the site again, we hereby announce the public beta of our new modification database.
We have decided to separate them into two pages as the fields which can be seen below the screenshots are adapted to the kind of modification. For the modifications in progress we want to give you as much of a preview to them as possible, while the site for completed modifications is supposed to reflect all information required to get to run them smoothly and to enjoy them.
Why is there so little content right now?
As mentioned above, both areas are currently in a stage of public testing. We have picked 2 modifications (one per page) to show what we are planning, and to get your feedback to. Once we have enough feedback and eventually adapted the pages to your wishes, we will start to add items to them at a regular base.
Where can I leave feedback?
Please leave your feedback, questions and suggestions in the comments below.

#7 - Posted by: JuggernautOfWar (Member) on 07-19-2009 at 22:34
What the hell is mod theft? How can you steal something that doesn't belong to somebody?
#8 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 07-20-2009 at 03:44
It's called "mental property" which is what allows everyone who uploads his/her work to FileFront to keep the control over it. If you for example make a map and upload it here, and at a later time decide you don't want to share it any more, I have to remove it on your request.
It's also why you should always provide a readme file stating exactly how you expect to be credited and where you want to submit your work to. This has a legal background and is also stated in the FileFront Terms of Service.
#9 - Posted by: CanadianBorg (Staff) on 07-22-2009 at 16:19
Quote:It's called "mental property"
Actually, it's technically called "intellectual property". And he's right - saying that a mod/map/whatever else cannot be shared without your permission is legally binding, and is all the evidence you need, should someone be caught using your stuff without said permission.
-CanadianBorg
P.S. Resistance is futile, eh?
#10 - the term - Posted by: EirwinRommal (Member) on 07-24-2009 at 13:41
the term is "Intellectual property" and if you guys are going hang somebody for taking a mod and using it their way or re-releasing it as something else, you have your priorities in the wrong place. if you want to protect it, copyright it . it cost $35 to copyright something like this. but me i would like to keep the thief around so i can then taunt them for far much longer than the mod would even be played. that is all i have to say
#11 - Posted by: chug_muffin (Member) on 07-26-2009 at 09:01
It's only legally binding if you turn it into a contract, eg
"By downloading this mod, you agree that you are only allowed to distribute it / incorporate it into another mod with my express permission.... etc etc"
#12 - Posted by: Pille (Staff) on 07-27-2009 at 03:44
# 10: Not at all. The FileFront terms & conditions are pretty clear about this and, as several times stated on various events, the services offered here are a luxury, not a right. If someone thinks he has to use them by ripping the work of others he loses that luxury. Simple and plain, I don't need to spend 35 $ to get someone doing this off the network.
# 11: It is legally binding because you agreed to the general TOS in the second you signed up to the FileFront Network. Therefor, see my reply above regarding the "luxury, not a right".
#13 - Posted by: chug_muffin (Member) on 07-27-2009 at 07:00
Ah well, my mistake then

Intellectual Property is a dicey subject, especially when it comes to someone's invested time and effort into a modification of another program (game mod for example). Seeing how I am not a lawyer, I cannot fully discuss or explain this subject. However I can say what the policy is for files that have been uploaded to FileFront.
"You may not post, distribute, perform, display, transmit or reproduce in any way any copyrighted material, trademarks, or other proprietary information without obtaining the prior written consent of the owner of such proprietary rights."
Basically, if there is any property that has been uploaded to FileFront, it cannot be distributed to another site or used by another person without the creators express permission.
after a couple of long off-times I finally got to look at some of the recently submitted files. A user brought my attention to the "Cheat Mod", and it was a pure error on our end that this ever got up here.
To the developer and everyone else planning a similar release, modifying the game's .exe file for anything but your own use is considered illegal by international standards and must not be uploaded here. This was not known to the staff member uploading it at the time he did, however to avoid legal trouble for both yourself and this site please do not upload further content including the game's .exe file, regardless of additions or removals done to it. If your modifications require additions to the .exe please mention this in your readmes.
If you are aware of further files including a modified .exe please inform the staff immediatly so we have the chance to contact the developers about it. Thank you.
while my absence for a schooling-measure has been known for longer, due to unforseen circumstances CanadianBorg will neither be available from Tuesday to Friday.
